Dr. CÉSAR MAGEN

PhD in Physics in 2005 at the University of Zaragoza in the field of magnetocaloric materials. In 2006 he began his activities in the field of advanced aberration corrected TEM techniques, firstly as a postdoctoral fellow at the CEMES-CNRS (Toulouse, France, 2006-2007), later in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tennessee, USA, 2007-2008). In 2008 he was awarded an ARAID Fellowship to continue his research activities at the Instituto de Nanociencia de Aragón (INA) of the University of Zaragoza.

He has been scientific staff of the Laboratorio de Microscopías Avanzadas (LMA) since its foundation, supervising the installation and setup of the first aberration corrected TEMs in Spain (2009) and Coordinator of the TEM Area of the LMA node of the ICTS-ELECMI in 2016-2017.

Since 2014 he is Associated Professor of the University of Zaragoza. In June 2017 he is appointed Staff Researcher of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Aragón (ICMA).

His current research interests focus on the development of novel functional nanomaterials in the fields of the complex multiferroic oxides and Nanomagnetism by the application of different advanced TEM techniques, such as aberration corrected STEM imaging and spectroscopy, and off-axis electron holography.

Dr. Magén has co-authored about 170 publications in international peer reviewed journals, with an h-index of 30. He has given more than 30 invited talks in national and international conferences as well as participated in numerous workshops and schools on electron microscopy.

Dra. SORAYA SANGIAO

She received her PhD in Physics in 2012 from the University of Zaragoza for studies on electronic transport properties and magnetization dynamics properties of nanostructures. After two years as a Marie Curie postdoctoral Fellow in CEA-Saclay (France) working on spin pumping experiments on nanostructures, she joined the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon as a postdoctoral researcher in 2014.

From September 2017 she is Assistant Professor at the Department of Condensed Matter Physics of the University of Zaragoza.

Her current research interests are the fabrication of nanostructures by Electron Beam Lithography, Focused Ion Beam and Focused Beam Induced Deposition and the study of the interplay between magnetic properties at high frequency, electronic transport and spintronic properties in nanostructures.

From August 2021, she is an Associate Professor in Condensed Matter Physics at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza.

ALIX TATIANA ESCALANTE

In 2021 she obtained her degree in Materials Engineering at the Universidad del Valle, Colombia. She obtained a master’s degree in Nanoscience, Materials and Processes at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona. In early 2022 she started working in the framework of a project at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragon (INMA-CSIC). She works on the fabrication and study of metallic micro- and nano- structures under cryogenic conditions by the Cryo-Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition (Cryo-FIBID) technique and on the fabrication of magnetic nanowires by the Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition technique for Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) applications.

Alix Tatiana Escalante

IGNACIO MORALES

He holds a degree in Engineering of Telecommunications and another one on Physics. He is an expert in instrument design at microwave frequencies. He is currently developing a PhD thesis on Spintronic devices based on Inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect where spin current is generated by spin pumping.

JIN WANG

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics in 2020 and obtained Master’s degree in Physics in 2023 specializing in magnetoelectric properties of the flexible perovskite, both from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In September of 2023, she started the PhD under the supervision of Prof. J. M. De Teresa and Dr. Soraya Sangiao at the institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon. Her research focuses on the fabrication and characterization of nanometric structures formed by topological insulators integrated with superconductor using Focused Ion Beam induced Deposition (FIBID).

Jin Wang

LAURA CASADO

In 2001 she got a degree in Technical Industrial Engineering in University of Zaragoza. In 2011 she got a Master degree in Nanostructured Materials for Nanotechnology Applications, given by University of Zaragoza.

From 2004 she is laboratory technician, having developed expertise in several techniques in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Physics.

From 2010 she is responsible for a FIB-SEM dual beam equipment, providing service and contributing to the research work in the group related to nanofabrication by focused electron and ion beams.

ISABEL RIVAS

In 2001 she got a degree in Chemistry provided by the University of Basque Country. From 2001 to 2004 she worked at CEIT-Microelectronics Area in San Sebastián. From 2006 to 2013, she has been technician responsible for giving service in optical lithography at the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragón.

From 2013, she is responsible for a FIB-SEM dual beam equipment, providing service and contributing to the research work in the group related to nanofabrication by focused electron and ion beams.

GALA SIMÓN

She achieved a degree in Physics in 2008, then obtained the Master in Physics and Physical Technologies in 2009, both provided by the University of Zaragoza.

From that time, she has developed expertise in various experimental techniques at the Institute of Nanosciencie of Aragon (INA), giving service to their researchers. Such techniques comprise thin film growth and characterization, optical lithography, TEM sample preparation and SEM techniques.

ALBA SALVADOR

She received her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 2018 and obtained a Master’s in Nanostructured Materials for Nanotechnology Applications in 2019, both from the University of Zaragoza. Following, she started the PhD in Physical Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. J. M. De Teresa and Prof. Pilar Cea at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon.

Her work is focused on the fabrication of metallic nanostructures by Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition under cryogenic conditions (Cryo-FIBID) and the study of their physical properties for potential applications in the semiconductor industry.

FABIAN SIGLOCH

He received a Master’s degree in Physics in 2020 with a major in Solid-State- and Nano-Physics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. In late 2020 he started a PhD position under the supervision of Prof. J. M. De Teresa.

His investigations are focused on the creation of a tungsten-based SQUID nanofabricated by means of Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition on top of an AFM tip. This FET-OPEN project is run in collaboration with IBM in Zurich (Switzerland) and the universities of Basel (Switzerland) and Tübingen (Germany).

Dr. MARIANO BARRADO

In 2004 he got a degree in Physics (Optics) in University of Zaragoza. He received his PhD in Science and Technology of Materials from the University of the Basque Country in 2011 for studies of composite materials based in shape memory alloys.

In 2011 he started working as technician of electron microscopy in services of the University of the Basque Country, developing several techniques in the fields of materials science, with focus on soft materials.

From 2019, he is responsible for the cryo-FIB-SEM dual beam equipment, providing service and contributing to the research work in the group related to nanofabrication by focused electron and ion beams. 

Lucía Herrer

LUCÍA HERRER

She received her PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2018 from the University of Zaragoza, Cum Laude and International Mentions, for the performed studies including the design, synthesis, assembly and characterization of new organic functional materials for their use in molecular electronics. This research work gave her a multidisciplinary point of view, which was later applied during her two-year postdoctoral period as a Junior collaborator in different projects related to surfaces molecular engineering for electrical applications and molecular electronics as a multidisciplinary approach to a sustainable and cheaper technology. Hereinafter, she extended its focus interest towards the nanofabrication processes and also to the advanced dual beam technologies, joining the research group from July 2020, as the responsible for the Cryo-HIM equipment recently acquired by the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).

AMAIA SÁENZ

Amaia is currently a PhD student at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA) under the supervision of Prof. J. M. De Teresa and Dr. S. Sangiao. She obtained her degree in Physics in 2021 and a Master ‘s degree in Nanostructured Materials for Nanotechnology Applications in 2022 at the University of Zaragoza. For her PhD thesis, she is focused on the nanofabrication of tungsten-based Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) using Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition (FIBID). These SQUIDs are intended for implementation in Atomic Force Microscopy cantilever tips for sensing applications. She is also working on the development of SQUIDs and Josephson Junctions with topological insulators as weak links using FIBID. In addition to her research, she collaborates on teaching assignments at the University of Zaragoza.

Amaia Sáenz
Juan Ocaña

JUAN OCAÑA

Graduated in Physics at the University of Zaragoza in 2023 and currently pursuing a master’s degree in Nanostructured Materials for Nanotechnological Applications, also at the University of Zaragoza. Currently, his work is focused on the fabrication and characterization of superconducting hybrid structures based on Focused Ion Beam Induced Deposition of tungsten-carbide (WC-FIBID) and 2D materials. Specifically, through the combination of techniques such as the aforementioned, along with other micro and nanofabrication methods, his research aims to obtain and characterize Josephson Junctions (JJs) formed by different materials in conjunction with the mentioned WC-FIBID.
